There are two "ports:" PowerPC Linux, which is based on the actual Linux kernel, and is covered under the GPL, and MkLinux, which is based on the Mach 3.0 kernel, originally written at Carnegie-Mellon University. MkLinux is different as well because the kernel is not under the GPL (see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html for information about the GPL), rather, it is mostly under a BSD style license (see http://www.openbsd.org/policy.html for a complete discussion). For the most part, any binary that can run under Linux/PPC can run under MkLinux.
