Can't First-time login as Root on Lombard w/ Linuxppc-1999 and RedHat
I successfully installed linuxppc-1999 onto my lombard laptop, and when I boot up, RedHat launches successfully, and brings up a login window- I type in "root" as the login, but the password that I set with the XInstaller does not work. I try again with no password, still doesn't work, try login as "admin" and "administrator" and still no work. So I figured that I forgot my password or got it wrong or something, so I reformatted and reinstalled and set a password that I did NOT forget, and it still didn't work. I don't know what to do... I'm stumped. Can someone please help?

I had this problem too. Here's how I get around it ... After installing, boot up into the live filesystem's X environment again using the ramdisk settings from installation. Mount your root disk, <don't set it to format!>, and swap. Bring up a terminal session by clicking on the desktop and choosing from the list. use 'cd /mnt/install/etc to get to your root etc directory. Enter an editor, I use vi, and change inittab such that the default init level at boot time is 1. Hit the reboot button on the Xli control panel and reboot into linuxppc without the ram disk, i.e., with your root partition specified as the boot device. Linuxppc will boot into single-user mode and there you can do 'passwd root' and set the password you desire. Remember to change the default init level in inittab back to 5 or to 3, if you prefer.

I had this same problem, but the password worked when I entered it in upper case (even though I can swear I registered it lower case - during both installations.)

the problem is that the pam and pwdb packages distributed withe linuxppc 2k
are buggy.
you must aquire the following versions of pam and pwdb:
pam-0.72-6.ppc.rpm
pwdb-0.61-0.ppc.rpm

ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/yellowdog/champion-1.2/ppc/YellowDog/RPMS/pam-0.72-6.ppc.rpm
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/yellowdog/champion-1.2/ppc/YellowDog/RPMS/pwdb-0.61-0.ppc.rpm

place them in a dir by themselves, and type
rpm -Uvh p*
