booting troubles with linuxppc 1999 and powermac 8600/200
I tried to install Linux 1999 on an external hard disk connected to a Macintosh Powermac 8600/200 with MacOs 8.6 I’ve downloaded all the necessary files from a mirror site. During installation with linux installer, after mounting and formating root and swap partition, the linux output window display :
failed to open/mnt/install//var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm rpmQuery : rpmdbOpen () failed Use of Uninitialized value at /root/bin/xli.pl line 681 Checking for installed stuff in /mnt/install/ Setting window size to 300, 321
Nethertheless, after installing default packages, I click on reboot. The rebooting session seems to work properly till the display of the repeating following lines :
According to/var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (XXX)
but seems to have been murdered mysteriously.
... According to/var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (344)
but seems to have been murdered mysteriously.
According to/var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (358)
but seems to have been murdered mysteriously.
and so on…, at least it ends with this :
INIT : Id “x” respawning too fast : disabled for 5 mn
And all stop. After 5 mn the same process start again and keeps going on, ending by :
INIT : Id “x” respawning too fast : disabled for 5 mn
Is there anybody to tell me what to do ? Thanks you a lot from Paris
First, login in as root using the "single" argument for the kernel. Then, at the shell prompt type: /usr/X11R6/bin/Xautoconfig
That should do the trick. You may occasionally see the respawning thing pop up again. Just keep applying Xautoconfig... Also, substituting X11 for the X11R6 directory seems to work also.
