My BMAC (G3 ethernet) chip won't let me do large downloads
Symptom: small transfers, or light usage, work fine. But as soon as you try to do some large, rapid, transfer, it gets a few hundred K into it then the chip stops receiving incoming packets. It can be restarted by sending out any packets, e.g. pinging something.
Explanation: (this is a GUESS, but it seems to fit) Ethernet hubs which use eavesdrop protection (that is, they scramble packets not addressed to the MAC address on that port) seem to cause this problem. I tried turning off the eavesdrop protection on my hub port and the problem went away. My hub was an HP AdvanceStack managable hub, a J3303A.
If somebody wants to explore further, mail me and I'll send them the output of some packet sniffs I tried.
