How To Use DHCP Cable Modem With LinuxPPC R5
There seem to be two programs to pick up DHCP information: dhcpcd and pumpd. Or, better still, use one of these programmes to configure it automatically:
linuxconf, netcfg, netconf
Linuxconf is the most actively useful one.

I was playing with netatalk to set up AppleTalk network access and messsed up my name server, domain name and a whole bunch of other stuff. I have fixed it and I felt I should share it with other cable modem owners who have the same problem (hopefully not). My system is a PB G3 with a cablemodem attached to a Farallon ethnet network with 2 additional Mac's on the same network. This set up relies on the fact you know your IP info, this does not cover DHCP or BOOTP configs. First, use 'netconf' it seemed to work for me better than 'netconfig' or 'linuxconf'. I ran 'netconf' under gnome. If you are only able to get into a shell the settup will look different but the setting will be the same. GUI is best I say. These are the headings and what was entered,
BASIC HOST INFO> (give yourself a name) ADAPTER 1> (check off enabled, ignor adapters 2,3 and 4) Config mode> manual IP Addr (put it here) Netmask> 255,255,255,0 Net Dev? eth 0 NAME SERVER SPECS DNS Useage> (check it to on) Nameserver 1&2 (put you 2 name servers IP's here) Search Domain (if you know it put it, or leave it. it will go there automatically later on) ROUTING & GATEWAY (click set, enter the gateway and enable packet routing) Quit and REBOOT, you should be golden.
