(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Start Here! (Getting started/First day) :
Kernel panic: no init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. What's up?
One problem may be that your partition mount points are wrong. The Linux PPC has no documentation, so this will be a common problem.
Use the MAC OS (disk doctor or something like that) to partition your HD into three partitions. Two of the partitions will be large, and will hold the MAC OS and Linux PPC. THe other partion will be double the size of your RAM.
When you install linux PPC, you are prompted to select partitions and mount points. Click on the box that represents your linux partion, and in the "mount point" box type "/". This will represent your linux partition. Be sure to click the "format" button. In the small partition (double the size of your ram) type "/swap" in the mount point box. Once again, click the format button.
  Once all this is done, click the format and mount button on the bottom of the screen.
Hope this helps.

Same problem on rev.2 b&w g3. The previous answer was a bit short sited, your do need to partition your disk, using HD setup in your MacOS utilities folder. you seem to have done all this correctly, including the pdisk functions, which allow for the installation to take place at all. I have varified my format with pdisk for MacOS, and have re-formated and re-installed twice, with the same results, no init found. Try passing init=option to kernel. Other entrys in this FAQ note a possible problem with the IDE controller. swapping the cable from your CD to the Boot drive has helped some. others claim that you should add "no autotune" to the more kernel arguments field in the BootX control panel. Some clarification here would be very helpful. I will post back when (if) I get it working here.
I had a similar problem when I was trying to install over ftp and http. It seems that nothing was actually getting installed. I assume that the file transfers were failing... maybe it couldn't locate the files. I realized after that I could have watched all the RPMs install (and then it probably would have been obvious). Hope this helps.

My experiences with Q3 1999 (December 1999). Installation on 7200/128MB/MacOS8.6. After partitioning etc according to installation notes, I got crashes when BootX came up on EVERY startup. This stopped when I followed the advice about turning on virtual memory ( forcing me to use 129 MB of disk space I didn't want to use for VM ). Then after default installation, I'd get the "Kernal panic etc". LinuxDisks showed that nothing had apparently been installed in the A/UX partitions (although installer looked like it was installing). Then I tried the other advice here about making sure to enter "/" for the root partition and "/swap" in the right most column in the partition/formatting screen in the installer (deleting the text that is there when you start up the screen), as well as clicking the buttons at the far right of the same screen, then formatting. This time there was a noticeable clicking etc, unlike in the previous bad installations. Then selected the default installation. This time, the installation process took a lot longer, accompanied by hard-disk sounds etc, and things worked next time I used BootX.
I also had this "panic" warning, after copying some files from my MacOS HD to my Linux HD using "LinuxDisks 1.0d7", a MacOS disk utility that permits the file managing between MacOS disks and Linux Disks.
I had the same problem... try copying all the .ppc.rpm files *without the folders* that you would find in the software folder, into the "RPMS" folder which is located into the RedHat folder... then use the redhat installer by passing redhat as an argument to BootX.. Installation should now work fine (of course this requires you to copy all the files onto a Mac HFS drive)
if installation went fine and you still get that error, try passing
init=/bin/bash
as a kernel argument... that might do it
cheers
