Help: Probing for bootstrap.conf, get syntax error
Having a problem. I setup my partitions and boot up MKlinux as it probes for the bootstrap.conf file it tells me that the file has a syntax error in line 1. I downloaded another copy from the apple server, but no luck. Has anybody had the same problem or an answer? Thanks.

I'm having the same problems here. I've tried everything. Even moved the mach_servers folder to another hfs disk and changed the settings in the lilo.conf file. I hope somebody has the answer. I'm trying to install from a second internal scsi-disc prepared with pdisk into an hfs and a A/ux partition. I have the install-files at the root level of the second disc. But still the installer can't find the mach_servers. I'm using powermac 7500 with 604/132 and 64 MB memory, 1 x 500 MB & 1 x 1 GB. I hope somebidy can help me out here.

I'm getting the same syntax error too. I'm running a 9600/300 with a 4gig internal in 3 partitions. I'm trying to install onto an external scsi, but I can't get past the very first step. The mach_servers folder is at the root of my first partition (which is actually partition 5 when viewed under pdisk), and I set in the lilo.conf rootdev=/dev/sda5 with no luck. I'm running OS 8.6 and my internal partitions are all standard HFS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This problem was rectified by downloading a full bootstrap.conf and not using the one that was compressed. Now if only I can keep my scsi bus from resetting when it's loading binutils-2.9.1-1a...

At least I'm not the only one with this problem? I'm running a beige G3/300. The mach_server directory is sitting in its own HFS partition on a SCSI, referred to in lilo.conf with /dev/sda5 (as given using pdisk) and still I get the same "Syntax Error" message during boot-up. What's going on? I tried downloading a 'non-compressed' version of bootstrap.conf from ftp://ftp.mklinux.apple.com/pub/DR3/mach_servers/ but it's only a 1K text file (or so it seems) and it was the same as the one I've got anyway. Am I making a stupid mistake here or what? Can any wizard tell me?

The problem is that you downloaded it as a text file. This means that your FTP client goes through the file and replaces all of the Unix-style carriage returns with MacOS carriage returns. Linux doesn't recognize the MacOS carriage returns, hence a syntax error. You need to download everything as binary files.
One way to salvage an improperly downloaded file is to open it up in BBEdit Lite 4.6. On the upper-left pane of the document window, there is a row of icons. One of them is a page. Open up its menu, and select Unix. Now save the file and it will work fine.
I don't know if there's a way to automate this fix if you happened to download the entire RPMS directory as text (420 files). I made this mistake and the best solution I came up with was to re-download it all as binary.

I forgot to mention before (2 parts above) that to begin with I didn't download any files except the ReadMe's - I'm actually using an installer on a free CD from a Macworld magazine, so in theory all the files should be in the correct format. (Obviously I made a mistake in downloading off the ftp site - after I read the part above I looked in the mach_server directory and bootstrap.conf did indeed open as a two-line SimpleText document - I've trashed that now and re-copied from the CD) I created a mini 4mb partition on my SCSI to hold the mach_server directory after I got the "bootstrap cannot find config file" message on an earlier installation attempt, but now the "Syntax error in line 1" of the config file is the stickler. Should I just abandon all hope and buy a CD off LinuxPPC or YellowDog? I really want to get Linux on my box!

Yeah. Same prob with me. CD from MacWorld. I tried some mucking around this line1 error but with no luck. Still hoping.

its the same at my box... the bootstrap cannot find its configuration file... i tried to boot from an other scsi drive, from internal ide, floppy nothing worked
