Moving LinuxPPC 1999 CD files to hard drive before install
If you have problems getting the X-Windows or RedHat installer to recognize your 3rd party CD-ROM during the install, you can move the installation files to a local HFS partition first. (Build the folder and files hierarchy as explained in the Installation & Users Guide). However... ***NOTE: After the copy, if your /software/RedHat/RPMS folder is empty, move the contents of each sub-folder of /software that was copied to your hard drive(except for ./RedHat of course) to the /software/RedHat/RPMS folder before starting the BootX installer. Otherwise, you will have an improper install (watch log for constant errors) that will lead to a "unable to open initial console" (an error that can mean other things) at reboot. beckett@goliath.montclair.edu

***I'll post the solution eventually, hopefully somebody will beat me to it. I too have had problems placing the PPC.org 1999 r5 installation files on a SCSI HD. Actually, I'm trying to put the MacOS on a 122mb partition, and the installer files on a separate 500mb SCSI disk. I use MacOS and BootX v1.1 on the 122mb partition. We proceed into the X linux installer, xli v1.4g and make it up to choose method [Local] but can't figure out how to tell xli where the files are - (500mb HFS SCSI disk).
