(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) X Windows :
How can I get 16/32 bpp in MkLinux X?
The X11R6.1 server distributed with MkLinux DR2 can't deal with displays
deeper than 8 bits. You can get MkLinux to boot in 8 bpp (switch to 256
colors in MacOS -- you may have to toss your Display Prefs to get the
change to stick), and then X should work.

With X11R6.3 you can use any color depth. See the where can I get X11 FAQ entry.
