Mac OS Asks to Reformat Linux Volumes At Boot Time.
Ooops, well i don't have an answer, but am looking for one.
Details: PowerBook g3 series w/8 gig drive. First partition is a 3.8 gig HFS+, then a 2 gig HFS+
Remainder 2 gig was chopped up in multiple unix volumes. I had tons of troubles with corruption. ie linux would die every 3rd/4th reboot so I gave up for a wile. I obtained HDT 3.0, recovered the space as a Mac volume. Used that for a week, then lopped it off (in HDT, created a 1.8 gig and swap). Used pdisk to change those partition types and reinstalled (everything in one vol now).
MacOS want's to format them (Volume x of size y is unrecognizable format or eject ?) at every boot, very obnoxious. Any hints anyone ?

Ahhh foo, even with extensions off it still does it. (System 8.5.1) Which means that the FWB HDT 3.0 driver or partition map tells the mac something about these partitions that it shouldn't. It wasn't until I used their formatting utility. Which I had to use because the first 2 parts are HFS+.
Anyone have any other suggestions ?

Open up Hard Disk Toolkit and open up it's driver options for the partition in question. In this dialog you will see an option called 'Mount on Startup' (or something similar). Disableing this option should fix the mounting program. Another option is to install 'MountX'. This will actually mount the linux partition onto the mac desktop instead of asking to format it.

I had the same problem with my iMac (R1 233), and it continuted after I updated to 8.6. This makes sense because it is HDT that is causing the messages. Unfortunately, it was impossible to unselect the "Mount at Startup" option because HDT doesn't give the user options for non-Mac OS partitions.
I tried using MountX 1.0a1, but it crashed my computer, halting the startup process, so I had to dissable it. It was however, correctly mounting my main Linux partition.
The eventual solution I found was at the FWB website. The newest maintainance release of HDT 3.0.2 corrects the startup format prompt problem and also hides the Apple_UNIX_SVR2 partitions from Norton Utilities.
