Question:
I have an existing installation LinuxPPC Release 4. How do I install
MkLinux "on top of" this, so that I could boot either from
Mach/MkLinux or from the LinuxPPC kernel?
Answer:
You'll be downloading a number of files. Do so using binary transfer
mode. You can get the files from any of these places:
ftp://globegate.utm.edu/pub/MkLinux/kernels/
ftp://snoopy.diamond.org/pub/MkLinux/kernels/
ftp://ftp.mklinux.apple.com/pub/contrib/kernels
Create the /mach_servers directory.
Get these five files:
bootstrap.conf other_files/bootstrap.conf.gz
default_pager other_files/default_pager.gz
mach_init other_files/mach_init.gz
System.map stable/System.map.generic.gz
vmlinux stable/vmlinux.generic.gz
Ungzip them and put them in the mach_servers directory.
Boot into MacOS.
Download MkLinux Booter from
other_files/MkLinux_Booter.hqx
Expand it and put it in the extensions folder.
Download a current mach kernel from
stable/Mach_Kernel.generic.gz
Ungzip it and put it in the extensions folder.
Create two text files in your preferences folder using SimpleText.
Call the first one MkLinux.prefs, and in it should be two lines:
bootos=MacOS # Boot to either "MacOS" or "MkLinux"
bootdelay=10 # Seconds to pause at boot dialog.
The second one is lilo.conf, which would normally contain something like:
rootdev=/dev/hda12
substituting the correct value for your root partition. Leave a couple of
blank lines at the end of the file.
Reboot, click Boot MkLinux, and see if it works.
