(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) PowerPC Linux :
BootX, what is it, and how do I use it?
BootX (by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt) is a marvellous little pair of items designed to remove Open Firmware booting as the main way of booting LinuxPPC and now, also MkLinux. BootX consists of an Application Control Panel, and an extension.
To use BootX, you need to do the following:
Download BootX-
You can get BootX from:
http://calvaweb.calvacom.fr/bh40/
Download the latest version from the site. Check the README's for any bugs or known issues. This is important, as sometimes, there may be easily correctable problems on your system. RTFM is the rule of thumb here.
The next thing you need is a boot kernel. You will put this boot kernel into the *ROOT* level of your system folder. That is just drop it into your system folder. It should not be in any folders within the system folder.
You can get a kernel from ftp://samba.anu.edu.au/pub/linux-pmac/
Get a kernel version 2.1.125 or higher. Also note: be sure to DL just a vmlinux file. the kernel, while in the system folder, to be used with BootX, must be named vmlinux. And be sure to download the kernel as a regular binary. To insure this, use Anarchie or Fetch. Do not use Netscape or MSIE.
