(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) PowerPC Linux :
Kernel Panic with drives larger than 2 GB
When installing Linux on a new Mac with the typical, large 4 GB or greater hard drive, you may get the "Kernel Panic" error when telling the installer where your RedHat directory resides on the drive - a fatal error that requires a system restart. Linux PPC cannot support partitions larger than 2 GB, and will crash when attempting to read such a partition. You will have to repartition your hard drive - or use a different hard drive - so that the partition that contains your RedHat directory is 2GB or smaller.
WARNING: Repartitioning a hard drive ERASES all data on that drive. If you repartition your drive, you will have to back up all data on it, then restore that data to the new partitions. Also, be sure that you format the partition that will contain the RedHat directory as HFS (Macintosh Standard), not HFS+ (Macintosh Extended.)
