Okay, to do this, you will need the following: 1) BootX You can get the latest version from: http://calvaweb.calvacom.fr/bh40/ 2) A rel 4 LinuxPPC CD. I recommend you do this with a CD. You can order one from http://www.linuxppc.org/ 3) a Ramdisk (ramdisk.image.gz) image, and a ... 4) kernel (vmlinux) both of which can be attained at ftp.samba.anu.edu.au. Your best bet here is to get the latest kernel. (2.1.127 works quite well with the PB G3 series) Okay, you have all your pieces. For the most part, this is simple enough, follow the directions for partitioning your disk(s). Once you have your partitions all set, unpack BootX. Throw the vmlinux and the ramdisk into the *top* level of your system folder. Note: the kernel *must be named vmlinux. The ramdisk *must be named ramdisk.image.gz* or BootX will not be able to find them. So, open BootX, select "No Video Driver" and "Use RAM Disk". Do not set your root partition yet, as you havent set up your filesystem yet. For kernel arguments, you need to enter: video=atyfb:vmode:14,cmode:32 push the linux button. You will boot into Linux, and the RedHat installer will come up. A few notes about the installer: A) Follow the advice about the partition scheme. Use their recommendations. B) Install only what you need. Once your install is completed, reboot, into MacOS, this time, open up bootX, and set your root partition: (Example: /dev/hda3) DeSelect the option for RamDisk. Hit Linux. Your off and ru clerk@tbcnet.com | |
