(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Booting Trouble :
Trouble booting install disk on an IBM 43P
Here are a few possible solutions to the problem:
"I can't get my IBM RS6000 43P to boot the install floppy"

1) Make sure that you have written the correct install image to the floppy disk. For the IBM 43P this is:

   dd if=installer.prep of=/dev/fd0

2) Make sure that you are using the correct boot sequence. You can change the boot sequence for the IBM 43P by pressing F5 during the boot, and it will change the boot sequence for that particular boot. Otherwise you can change the boot sequence by inserting the system mananagement disk and pressing F4 during the boot. See your computer manual for more information.

3) If the computer reads in the entire install disk, and then the screen goes completely blank (after running through the usual diagnostics). Then check the back of your machine. If you find two jacks for the monitor, one is for a video card, and the other goes directly into the motherboard. You should unplug the monitor, and plug it back in to the OTHER plug. When you do this you will see the desired installation screen.

This solved my problems, I hope it will solve yours.

On the 43P-150 copy the kernel image (arch/ppc/chrpboot/zImage) to a DOS floppy. Open Firmware can load a DOS file. Press F8 when your machine boots up so that it puts you at the OF> prompt. Then type boot floppy:,\ZIMAGE root=/dev/sdXX (where XX=your root disk partition) to boot the kernel image.
