INSTALLER.COFF hangs, can't mount 1:0 (I am using > 640X480 video)

Problem: I just downloaded INSTALLER.COFF, put it on a floppy, set my Open Firmware to boot it (fd:INSTALLER.COFF), and it boots, but the Red Hat Installer doesn't run. Instead, the system just sits there saying something about not being able to mount something at 1:0. I can't even hit ^Z or command-F2 to get a shell prompt.

Solution: Check your video mode. Set it to 640X480X60Hz and use the on-board video. This worked for me. I can't explain it, my best guess is that the kernel and/or applications in INSTALLER.COFF are written for only this video mode.

I have a Power Computing PowerCenter 150 (7200 clone, I think), and have tried 800X600 and 1024X728 at 72Hz and 75Hz each. In 75MHz, I get this hang (but, once I got Linux installed, it high-res at 75MHz worked OK), in 72MHz, I get a scan-out-of-range on my monitor in Linux, but not MacOS.

Easiest way to change video mode to 640X480: Reboot into MacOS ("bye" at Open Firmware prompt or reset the PRAM) and use the Monitors (or Monitors & Sounds) Control Panel.

I am new at this; haven't a clue about the language needed [have been strictly a mac guy since 1986]; thought I'd try linux. Successfully installed YDL on 233hz 'platinum' desktop G3.
got into linux -fun, tho I didn't know how to get PPP configured for mail and browsing. But NOW after I log in with 'root' and password and 'startx' I get frozen message: 'OUT OF SCAN RANGE' and all I can do is restart the Mac from the keyboard. Don't have a clue.
