Install problems on G3 400Mhz
When i boot the Mklinux DR3 installation, the only thing i get is "black screen of death" ?? Have any body made succsesfull install on these machines yet???? If so, i need the secret formula??

Hi, Have you made sure that you've turned up your monitor brightness? On the PB G3 400 you need to use the brightness control keys that double as function keys. This stumped me for a few moments while installing LinuxPPC-1999, though I'm somewhat ashamed to admit it :)
Good luck!

I have a PB G3 400 and also can not get past the "black screen of death" - I have tried the brightness without success. I have also tried booting from a disk with NOTHING on it except the base OS 8.6 system required and the MKLinux stuff - still get the blank screen while attempting install boot.

Just a thought - my 8.6 partition is HFS+ - will this install boot off of an extended partition ? or does it require a standard MacOS partition ? or does it not matter ?

I am also having trouble getting linuxppc to a point where I can do an install. The bootx process goes fine up to the time x is supposed to start. The screen just goes to the grey screen with a functional mouse (the cursor is an X). Then nothing.

Firstly linux will not boot of an HFS+ (aka HFS extended) partition. This should be fixed in a later release once HFS+ support is available, however until then you will need to create a normal HFS partition to boot off of. As to the "black screen of death" problem, have you tried clicking the "no video driver" option in BootX?

I am having the same black screen problems when trying to install R5 on an iMac DV G3 400 Mhz.
I pulled down the kernel that was dated 12-18-99 from a link off the linuxppc.org site, and still no luck.
Any ideas?
Thanks!!!

I had similar problems with my G3 PB. I used the kernel I found at http://www.linuxppc.org/hardware/lombard/ and it booted okay for me. Now the have the try init= option problem. sigh.

I have also attempted to install MkLinux D3 onto the blue & white G3 400 Mhz machine, as per the instructions posted. I get a back screen with a large white block cursor and no response. I assume it cannot find the mach_servers folder in which to begin the installation process. Did I understand one post to suggest you could mix and match the D3 installation with the LinuxPPC kernal that apparently DOES work on the blue and white G3's? Also, it seems silly that MkLinux does not boot on ANY Macintosh computers you can actually buy today! Doesn't Apple have any pride?

I too am having problems with a PBG3, first I recieved the black screen and then added the vmlinux kernel found in the Lombard folder on the FTP site, this would work to get me to boot, however at the end of the boot it kept telling me that it couldn't find live.filesystem. It's there, but I had a HFS+ partition so I reformatted that in Mac OS Standard and tried again and got the same error, couldn't find live.filesystem, any suggestions.
