(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) PowerPC Linux : (Category) LinuxPPC for PCI Macs :
How do I switch resolutions?
You can't switch resolutions from within X - you'll need to do it
from the console before you launch X. Use vmode to switch resolutions -
it's available in the pmac-utils rpm package, at

ftp://ftp.linuxppc.org/RedHat/RPMS/

The above location is for the shared libs version. A statically linked
version should be somewhere at the same site. The package also includes
man pages, so the vmode man page should have all the info you need.
