Why doesn't ethernet work properly on my 7200/90?
I had a problem where the built-in ethernet on my Power Mac 7200/90 worked with a crossover cable, but failed when used with a hub. When sending packets larger than a few hundred bytes, the connection locked up.
It seems there's known issue with early 7200/90s, which is covered by an Apple TIL article at http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n18944.
Suggestions from the mailing list included:
1) Change the MTU of the interface to something smaller.
     Try ifconfig eth0 mtu [1400,1200,1100,1024]
See what it takes to get a good connection.
     use ping -f -s 1500 <some machine on the local net>
let it run for five seconds. see if lost packets <=3%
2) Keep your NIC to NIC setup. 3) Install a PCI NIC in the 7200
I opted to buy a PCI card and forget about the built-in ethernet. Apparently Apple used to replace affected logic boards for free, but I suspect they no longer support an aging machine like the 7200!
