![]() ![]() Why can't I use Netscape? Why won't Netscape run? (note: this is mostly out of date) |
First of all, Netscape requires shared libraries to be installed on the system.
If you don't have shared libraries installed, you'll get an error like this:
# /usr/local/netscape/netscape /usr/local/netscape/netscape: File doesn't existObviously the 'netscape' file is there, so what's the problem? The problem is that there are a number of additional pieces (shared libraries) that must also be present on your system in order to run 'netscape'. That's what the message is telling you. Shared library support was not present until MkLinux DR2.1U3, so if you haven't updated to at least that level, you won't have them. MkLinux DR3 will contain shared libraries by default. g.thomas@opengroup.org
A couple issues should be clarified. It appears there are two releases
of the Mklinux Netscape 4.04 as of 11/13/97. The first version is
has a nasty bug preventing the use of textedit fields in the program.
This version can be identified by the size of its file (7258671 bytes).
A second version with this problem fixed is now available on the
Netscape ftp servers with a size of 7249270 bytes. This is the one
you currently want to get. Be careful because as of this afternoon
a few of the mirror ftp servers at Netscape still had the old buggy
version instead of the newer one. The other remaining 'bug' in this version of Netscape is that you must explicitly define the CLASSPATH for java to work (otherwise it gives a bus error). I call this a bug because on Irix and Solaris I know that the MOZILLA_HOME variable being set is enough for Netscape to find all its paths. So currently (assuming you used the default netscape installation directory of /usr/local/netscape) you need to add export CLASSPATH=/usr/local/netscape/java to .bashrc or execute it at the prompt. With MOZILLA_HOME and CLASSPATH set Netscape seems to work wonderfully so far. Even on java filled pages. Enjoy... howarth@nitro.med.uc.edu
I have MkLinux DR3 running on a 6100. After a little experimentation, I found
that Netscape Navigator 4.08 (standalone) seems to work glitch-free. I tried
Communicator 4.5, but it wouldn't run for very long before bombing out. You can get 4.08 from: ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.08/english/unix/unsupported/mklinux/ Run the install exactly as described in the README file, and you're all set. ammutiso@mit.edu
I have looked and cannot figure out how to install Netscape. Please point me to a basic MKlinux or Linux web site thats show how to install programs and basic stuff. I got the OS to work were do I look now to be productive, etc.
