(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Hardware Compatibility :
Apple Power Mac G4 compatibility
Linux can run on the Power Mac G4, including the PCI and AGP models. (Introduced in 1999.) Plase see <A HREF="http://www.linuxppc.org/">www.linuxppc.org</A> for links to current information on installing on these machines. To install on the AGP models is a little difficult as of this writing (January 26, 2000), but should improve as development continues. Apparently Ethernet is now working.

I wrote a basic installation-page for the G4 sawtooth. With all the important information on one place.
Maybe useful for someone starting install PPCLinux on a G4(AGP) Machine. A newer Kernel 2.2.15pre7 with built-in joliet filesystem support is also available at:

Note that the current RSYNC builds from linuxcare.com.au::linux-pmac-stable contain all the patches required to build a kernel that will boot a "Sawtooth" G4/iBook/iMac DV. As of LinuxPPC 2000, the stock kernel also supports this machine.
As a sidenote, to get sound working on a G4, type in this: modproble -c > /etc/conf.moduiles #To make a new conf.modules file if you do not have one >0 bytes echo "alias sound dmasound" >> /etc/conf.modules

If you have an Adaptec SCSI controller card your bootup will hang. Current solution is, remove the controller card, see http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/1034.html
