Yellow Dog instalation has X-Y-Z Bizzare errors -No FS
This one is easy :). It's cause pdisk cannot reread the disk cause the device is busy so in order for the partition table to be updated properly you have to reboot.

If you repeatedly install YDL, and it repeatedly disappears and you lose you linux partition, note that in order for pdisk to do something vital (I don't know what it is) you must cut power to the mac AFTER you format, but BEFORE you assign your mount points. Next time through, just confirm the fdisk settings and continue with the mount point assignments.
(Anyone know why?)

Well, if you're talking about this happening on Old World machines, the problem is pretty simple: the installer is running off the CD, but the kernel itself is actually running off the hard drive, and when the kernel is running, mount points can't be modified (that I know of).

To clarify a little more...
The kernel is running, usually off the drive you're attempting to format, in which case you can't fully format it, because the disk is currently busy (running the kernel). I doubt this happens for users that are installing YDL to a secondary hard drive.
