Help! A blue screen!
Hi, thought that "blue screens" where a windows-only plague, but i've got one under LinuxPPC. Installed LinuxPPC 5 on my 7200 and after rebooting into Linux the system asks for a localhost login. Or something like that. The problem is that this prompt appears only for 1 second and then disappears again. The screen then rapidly flashes the lightblue screen with the LinuxPPC logo in the top leftcorner and back to the black screen with the prompt and back to the light blue screen, etc. Untill, after flashing to and from ± 8 times, the light blue screen holds and nothing happens anymore. No reaction on any mouse-click (even not option 2/3) or keystroke. The machine does not hang because i can move my mouse around. Please help i'm new and i'm very stuck!
Thanks, Tjerk
I had a similar problem I think on a Power Mac G3, just when I thought I had a successful installation, bypassing the password exercise, and tried to boot, up comes the dreaded blue login screen asking for a hostname whatever the hell that is and a password. Back to the installation stuff and inserted a password and noting the manual says to use root as hostname. Tried 'root' and '/root' and '/', together with the password but no I am permanently locked out of Linux. Is there some way of junking the login procedure as it's not only a pain but a definite hindrance to any further operations.
It sounds like X is messed up. Boot up in single user mode by typing "single" in the kernel options for bootx. Then type the following:

cd /usr/X11R6/bin
./Xautoconfig

I have a similar problem on my 7200/75, but not the same. When I select Linux the screen goes off, comes back very briefly with a wierdly colored version of an OS9 screen. Then it turns black and stays that way. From what I read in the threads it appears that there are a number of versions of the black/blue screen problem. I have been caught on a light blue screen, but rarely. I purchased the CD so I am asking LinuxPPC tech support for help.
I had the same problem with a PowerCenter clone (7200 equiv.) when I got the Gnome login dialogue but just looped round each time I entered my details. It was a video setting. I went into the BootX Options screen and turned off "Force Video Settings". That fixed it. I was able to login prior to this using one of the Gnome options that gave me a small terminal window in the bottom right corner of the screen where I could do command line stuff.
