(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Booting Trouble :
DMA timeout during partition check on B&W G3
New G3/450 (12 GB HD) was failing at boot on the partition check on hda with some sort of DMA error.
I solved this by swapping the CDROM and HD cables (CDROM should be on bus 1, HD should be on bus 0 - on the right) and by using the vmlinux-G3v2 kernel found at http://www.linuxppc.org/BlueG3/.

I can now boot Linux on an external SCSI hard drive using hda=none as a kernel argument (Adaptec 2930 SCSI card)
Hi,
after days of testing an reading documentation a found that the kernel option hda=noautotune solves the problem with the swaped ide-cables. Linux now knows the ide-harddisk and installation can go on.
good luck
marc
You've got to enter it in the "more kernel arguments" field of the BootX window. See the screenshot I made for you: http://members.kabsi.at/krawutzi/images/BootX.jpg
Big Thanks go out to Marc for that hint!
