"Kernal Panic: No init found..." possible solution
I got this message when trying to install using BootX. On a whim I downloaded the 'vmlinux' and 'ramdisk.image.gz' files using Fetch's 'binary' mode rather than 'automatic' mode. When I did this the problem went away.

I also had this problem. I downloaded the "LinuxPPC 1999 Installer" and ran this after which the problem went away.
gordonm@dcs.st-and.ac.uk
I had the same exact problem while installing R5. A few lines above I also had the error "Partition check: sda: scsidisk I/O error ... unable to read partition". I detached the cable to my external SCSI scanner and Zip-250 drive, and was able to proceed a good bit further (but not all the way).

I had a similar experience trying to load LinuxPPC 1999 Q3. I was trying to load Linux onto an external SCSI drive(as /dev/sda6) which was much faster than my internal IDE. My theory is the installer, which runs kinda in Mac, formats and loads the chosen packages into the drive just fine. But during the reboot to go into the just-loaded Linux, that Linux won't work with my SCSI card (an OrangeMicro Grappler 930,) and with the "Use RAMdisk" box unchecked in Boot-X LILO (or whatever,) had nowhere to look for a kernel/system, so it freaked: Kernel Panic. Once I had the internal IDE partitioned (/dev/hda6) and set up as /, everything went fine, although I still really miss the speed of that Atlas IV.
As an aside, I *highly* recommend that persons doing the Linux install thing partition their drive first with Apple drive setup, then go into pdisk and change the partitions to Linux. The SIZE numbers will already be there for you so you don't have to do any math, and using the Apple GUI tool lets you put the soon-to-be Linux partitions to the outside of the disk (the top of the "box" representing your drive in Apple Drive Setup,) where those disk sectors will run under the read/write head(s) a good deal faster than if they were way in by the spindle. It's a noticible speedup.

I have had similar problems with this error after the installer is run and I am trying to reboot into Linuxppc. It runs through the boot process until right after the partition check and then I get a series of lines as follows:
Freeing unused kernel memory: 92k init 32k prep Warning: unable to open an initial console. Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. Rebooting in 180 seconds..
This is on a B&W G3 (400 MHz) with three logical Mac partitions (equivalent to hda5,6, and 7) a root partition at hda8, home at hda9 and swap at hda10
I tried switching the order of the three linux partitions around as that solved problems I had previously on another system, but it didn't change things here.
I am using the 2.2.6 kernel (haven't had it boot yet, so no chance to upgrade:)
I am stumped and would appreciate some suggestions as I am fairly new to this, but trying to learn fast (aren't we all).

I had a similar problem when I was trying to install over ftp and http. It seems that nothing was actually getting installed. I assume that the file transfers were failing... maybe it couldn't locate the files. I realized after that I could have watched all the RPMs install (and then it probably would have been obvious). I ended up just downloading all the RPMs with Anarchie. I probably also could have just gotten a URL that worked, but I had already started downloading the RPMs.

Hope this helps.

I had this problem doing an FTP install. After looking into the matter I found the problem was the LinuxPPC 1999 Q3.bin file.
Check the date from the place you downloaded it. If the date is after Jun-11-1999 the you probably downloaded the xli Version 2.5.0 alpha. this version is loaded with bugs and will not install properly. I don't know how this alpha version got distributed. You will have to find the file with a date of Jun-11-1999. that will give you xli version 1.4g. this version is stable. I installed with xli version 1.4g and I didn't have the problem any more.

I don't know how this alpha version got distributed. You will have to find the file with a date of Jun-11-1999. that will give you xli version 1.4g. this version is stable. I installed with xli version 1.4g and I didn't have the problem any more.
