(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) System Configuration : (Category) Disks :
I keep getting media errors with my Jaz/Zip/SyJet disk
Frequently when copying to/from these types of disks, the error
target 4: Sensed a Recovered error
occurs and is displayed on top of X Windows, the console, whatever.

"This has been talked about here repeatedly... I think the consensus is that if you have to run mklinux from removable media, you have to put up with these. There's some finger pointing involved as to whose fault the message is, either the media or the kernel. It's been suggested that turning the drive's write verification off from MacOS may help, but in my case it didn't - and this doesn't sound like something you'd want to turn off anyway."

The errors are really just an annoyance - they seem to resolve themselves without corrupting any data. Just find your window manager's "refresh display" command, or I think you can run 'xrefresh'.
