Why does lpr based network printing from another machines fail?
Version of the Linux lpr package at least through lpr-0.31-1a have a bug which causes lpd to crash when it tries to see if another machine on your network has permission to connect.
Until a new fixed version of lpr comes out you can use a patch I made against the lpr-0.31.1a source rpm. The patch is located at:
        http://rampages.onramp.net/~rmore/binaries/lpr-0.31-1a.patch.gz
You will have to download the source rpm, apply the patch, and recompile.
Please also note that you may also need to configure your hosts.allow, hosts.deny, hosts.equiv, and/or your hosts.lpd to properly enable access.

I've created an RPM using the above patch. You can get it here.

If you want the SRPM, it is here. (Note: This URL may eventually change.)
