MkLinux Installation Problems on G3 All-in-Ones
For those who are trying to install MkLinux on their G3 All-in-Ones and the installer doesn't see your IDE drive, I have a solution that doesn't involve an external SCSI drive. This workaround assumes a right-out-of-the-box G3 All-in- One. It may fix the same problem on other G3s, but I'm really not sure.
1. Use pdisk to see if your hard drive has the MkLinux id /dev/hdc. If it does, then you're in luck. Keep reading. 2. Turn off your computer and remove all cords from the back. You're about to switch the IDE cables so your hard drive is given the id /dev/hda. 3. Remove the four screws from the back of the computer and pull out the drawer. 4. If you're facing the back of the computer and looking down on the motherboard, the IDE cables connect to the motherboard on the lower left corner of the motherboard. 5. Here you'll find three ribbon cables connected to the motherboard. If the three were numbered in order from the edge of the motherboard, the IDE cables are 2 and 3. Unplug them and switch them (plug 2 into where 3 was and vice versa). 6. Push the drawer back in and screw it back up. When you turn your computer on, it will work just like it did before. Use pdisk to make sure the id changed. 7. Mklinux will now install!
Have fun.
