(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) PowerPC Linux : (Category) LinuxPPC for PCI Macs :
2.1 broke rpm!
The 2.1 kernel and the rpm that comes with DR2 (2.2.2) don't
seem to be 100% compatible. Among the problems reported are:

<menu>
<li> rpm -i seems to succeed with the install, but rpm reports
an error and the rpm database does not get updated,

<li> Using a newer rpm (2.2.8), problems with loading some of the .rpm
files in /var/lib/rpm. Some have reported success with removing
these .rpm files, but I have had no such luck.
</menu>
I have not figured out a fix for this problem. Anyone else?

<p>
Installing rpm version 2.3 solved the problem for me.<p>

I had to delete the files in /var/lib/rpm and call rpm --initdb and
rpm --rebuilddb after installing 2.3

A tarball of the latest rpm package can be found at:
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/code/rpm/
configure followed by make (of version 2.4) finally got things working
on my linux-pmac system. The pre-compiled source tree linked with static
libraries that I built from 2.4t can be found at:
 ftp://ftp.linuxppc.org/users/harry/rpm-2.4.tgz
