(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Wish List :
Wish we could run Macintosh Apps under Linux
This is a somewhat strange wish for people who already have this running
on Macintoshes....

However...

There are many different directions being taken on this problem.
Historically, Apple has MAE which will run the Mac OS on the HP
and on the SUN. If Apple can do this I bet the MAE people can
get it to work on a machine that has the same processor and even
the ROM!

Under Linux, some people have made some progress in the i386 world
with a program called Executor. (* Any Executor people around? *)

Check out http://www.ardi.com for more info on this.
It doesn't use Apple code, its 80% compatible with 68K Mac apps, and
translates MacOS system calls into Linux system calls.
It is rumored that Apple might license the Executor technology for Mklinux
and OpenStep to run MacOS applications, but that remains to be seen.
Perhaps Red Hat or someone else might license the code? Who knows?
ARDI did announce a NextStep and OpenStep version of Executor was
in the works. Maybe we can put pressure on them to make a Mklinux,
LinuxPPC, or Red Hat Linux 68K/PPC version?
Only you can make a difference and inform these companies to include
Macintosh emulation under Linux, or another Unix system.

Norman G. King (cable@i1.net) web page:
http://www.i1.net/~cable
added this, and has no connection to ARDI or Apple.

Since we can mount our mac volumes thanks to hfs kernel support,
That should help out alot in making progress in this wish.

Has anyone ported Basilisk yet? If not, I'm pretty sure the sources are
freely available. Sure, it only emulates a MacPlus with 2MB of RAM, and
you need a copy of the original MacPlus ROMs (it crashes if you feed it
anything later), but it does work to run old versions of Word...

By the way, ARDI's Executor is ok, but the version I've played with
isn't too much better than Basilisk. It only runs 68000 apps (or was it an
020? I know it's not an 030 or better), it only emulates up to system
6.0.5 (no 6.0.7, much less 7), and the list of programs it won't run
includes Finder, Word, Hypercard, Eudora, Netscape 2 or later (I don't
know about Netscape 1.x or 0.9), and other such unimportant apps... On
the other hand, it's much faster than Basilisk, and supports Color...

Maybe something like VirtualMac (the unfinished Mac emulator for BeOS)
would be better--use the ROMs that are already in the computer (that
would, of course, mean that it would only run on Macs) to as much of
the work as possible. The easiest (and slowest...) thing to do would be
to emulate the hardware, map the ROMs and some of your RAM to your
emulated hardware, and start it up.

Check out the "MacOS under linux-pmac" page at

Some interesting things going on there...

The Mac on Linux PPC site has been slightly modified to:

slab@pobox.com
The guys who brought Macintosh to the BeOS with Sheepshaver have begun work on
a similar project for LinuxPPC. You can look for updates at their site:
