(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Languages and Compilers :
Is there a java for Mklinux/linux-pmac?
If you don't want to bother setting up a java-vm or need to run java applets on webpages on your PowerPC Linux machine, you can still Netscape Communicator 4.6 or 4.7 to run applets with. You will need the java enabled version of it, LinuxPPC 1999 Q1/Q2 did not include it.

It should be noted, that using Javascript (aka Livescript) with Netscape 4.6 may cause the browser to crash, so you want to have that disabled if possible or upgrade to Netscape 4.7 for PowerPC Linux.

10/1/99: Updated about Lastest Browser Info, and a few general corrections. Note at this time Netscape 4.7 for PowerPC Linux is not yet out, but will be out shortly according to penguinppc.org.

There is a Java Development Kit for PowerPC Linux (glibc 2.1) now.

Homepage: http://business.tyler.wm.edu/mklinux.

The current version is JDK 1.1.6 and 1.2.1 (aka Java2). All binaries are for glibc 2.1, work on LinuxPPC R4/MkLinux DR 3 has discontinued.

It seems to work reasonably well for the toy programs I have written. I am not sure, but I don't think that the threading actually allows timeslicing. But this might well be programng error on my part.

It also has some JIT support, which I think is supplied free of charge (and unsupported) by Metrowerks. It seems to work for me.

There are also lots of Java thingamadoobies(extensions??) around now, such as servlet support for Apache, and JDBC drivers for postgressql(although this is apparenlty only a subset of the full JDBC specifivcation).

I have not managed to get the Servlet support for Apache going yet, but I assume it works.

Haven't tried the JDBC for postgressql yet at all.

But the main thing is a JDK is available and it has compiled everythign I have compiled on the Sun JDK.
