(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) X Windows :
How do I _stop_ X? (on LinuxPPC 2000 Q4, anyway)
While trying to reconfigure X with the 2000 Q4 release of linuxppc, I had a bit of trouble because, even if I killed it as root, X wouldn't die (for long)!
If you want to configure the X server with LinuxPPC and you need to shut down the server to do your configuration, you should edit the /etc/inittab file and remove the word 'respawn' from the line near the bottom that looks like
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
I actually commented this line out, since I didn't want X to start up automatically at all.
Thanks to fconcolor@internet-frontier.net for this info, from the "Something been murdered??!!" section of this FAQ. I felt it was worth replicating here, in a section explicitly about getting init not to re-start the server all the time.
