Cannot login as root when telneting from a remote machine.
Take a look at http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/411.html
----from that answer------- You shouldn't telnet as root ANYWAY (but yeah, the default is to disallow this in MOST if not all flavors of unix -- it's a feature of Rhapsody too).
You can always ssh as root though. :) ssh is *far* preferable as it is more secure. -----end answer--------
You shouldn't be using root very much. I have scrwed up more than one linux box by doing everything as root. You should connect as a normal user, set up what you want to do, su to root, run the install commands to do what has to be done as root, and then switch back to a normal user to manage stuff. This is much safer than being root too much of the time.
