(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Hardware Compatibility :
Upgrading your kernel with USB devices
With the 2.2.10 kernel, the USB drivers changed and don't work so well anymore. The two solutions I found with the help of others is to use the 2.2.14pre9 kernel from http://linuxppc.org/BlueG3/g3_kernel_howto.shtml or to build a 2.2.14 final kernel with 2.3 USB drivers patched in.

To build a 2.2.14 kernel with USB drivers patched in, get the 2.2.14 source from ftp.kernel.org and grab the patch and instructions for applying the patch from http://www.suse.cz/development/usb-backport/.

With either option, you will also need to modify your XF86Config file as well as your /etc/sysconfig/mouse and /etc/sysconfig/keyboard files (only need to modify for USB devices). Information on modifying those files can be found at http://linuxppc.org/BlueG3/g3_kernel_howto.shtml also.

The usb drivers in the standard 2.2.10+ source tree don't work with USB devices on Macs without patching. Your system will hang on boot 99% of the time, and on the rare times it does boot, it will hang on shutdown.
