Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : System Configuration : Networking :
I do have problems too with network configuration |
I just have installed linuxppc99 (R5 package) on a UMAX 3000 Apple clone. It seemed to have gone smoothly and I even could fix the french keyboard problem without messing everything up. However, the system does not seem to have configured correctly the tcp network parameter files since I cannot get Netscape, ftp or telnet to "link me" to the net. What should I do ? I do get also the 'Network unreachable" message. The IP address I entered while installing linux is OK, the net mask, also, the only thing that does not appear in the ifcfg file is the domain name server address although I entered it during the installation process in netconfig...when I try to retrieve this latter info by typing
hostname -d
I do get a blank return of the system ...
Does someone have a clue ?

There is a deafening silence in the LinuxPPC community on the issue of NIC drivers. Apparently, you have to obtain a linux driver from your NIC manufacturer, which will come as a ".c" file. Then, you have to put this driver in the right directory, edit your netconfig file, and then completely recompile the whole blasted OS, which will probably cost you a weekend or two and end up erasing your hard drive. What a clunky piece of junk!!!
