Gnome Midnight Commander - ?!?at? looking files Appear
In older version of the GNOME Midnight Command (gmc for short), there was a nasty bug that litered your hard drive with random named files, that were really hard to delete from the command line (having all of those rather strange names).

It's a bug in older versions of GMC, the fix is:

1) use another file manger (or none at all) -- KDE one is nice
2) upgrade to a newer version.
