(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Start Here! (Getting started/First day) :
This is weird. Even though I turned automount off my partition still mounts.
Sorry for abusing the Faq-O-Matic this way, but this is driving me nuts.
I was preparing my external 2 Gig drive for a LinuxPPC installation. I made 3 hfs partitions in the following order:
   1 (root) 1.6 GB,
   2 (swap) 100 MB,
   3 (MacOS, w/MacOS 8 installed) 300 MB.
For partitions 1 and 2 I turned off automount using Drive Setup 1.6.2. Strangely, partition 1 still mounts. Everything works fine for partition 2.
I'm using a beige G3/300, 4GB UW with MacOS 8.6.
Any suggestions anyone? -RZ

Reformat the drive and everything should be OK.

I had the same problem, but didn't need to reformat. I just booted from the MacOS Cd and used Drive Setup to turn automount off for a second time; for whatever reason, it didn't save it the first time. It worked fine after that.

Every time you install a version of the Mac OS including the first time it resets the partitions to mount at startup.
