How do I set up my non-American keyboard?

To use a French Macintosh keyboard with Linux, see the following URL:
           http://www-sor.inria.fr/~shapiro/fr-mklinux-keyboard/
This covers both X-windows and console mode.
Short explanation: Keyboard layouts can be customized. The standard Linux installation understands the American QWERTY layout. It does contain configuration files for non-American layouts, but my experience is that they are incorrect and incomplete. I provide configuration files that conform as exactly as possible to French Macintosh keyboard layout. I also provide detailed instructions and automatic installation.

I have set up a Web page on how to configure MkLinux to support foreign
keyboards under both console mode and X-Windows. An improved German
keyboard mapping is also included.

(this is a partial repost from the answer to
"How do I get my foreign (se, fr, de) keyboard to work with X?",
so take a look at that one, too).

I have posted a complete solution for configuring both the consoles and Xwindows
to use the dvorak keyboard layout. It can be found at the following address:

If you want to use a German keyboard layout and Xpmac, which is the standard X
server if you install LinuxPPC R5 with the X Windows installer, follow the
instructions of Axel Rauschmayer at http://www.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/
~rauschma/axellent/unix.html up to step 3. You don't have to configure XFree like
in step 4. Instead, edit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf (for the gnome display manager)

There is a line below "[servers]" which reads
0=/usr/bin/X11/X

change it to
0=/usr/bin/X11/X -kbdtype de

If you boot right into X Windows (run level 5), this is all you have to do.

If you boot to the console and later use "startx", edit /usr/X11R6/bin/startx
and change the line
serverargs=""
to
serverargs="-kbdtype de"

Thanks to D.H.Herrendorfer@ukc.ac.uk for the startx instructions.

Greetings,

If you're trying to get portuguese support on a Apple PowerBook G3 UK keyboard,
then take a look at:

ftp://ftp.projecto-oasis.cx/pub/linux/misc/

In there you will find correct, and full-featured, console and X keymaps, along
with instructions on how to set everything up.
