What about Debian GNU/Linux?
Debian GNU/Linux is being ported to the PowerPC architecture.
More information is available from:
http://www.debian.org
There is a mailing list for the Debian-PowerPC project; subscription info is at the Debian website. (URL above)
A base tarball seems to be available. No one really knows when this port will be ready, since it is in the very early stages of development, but version 2.1 of Debian GNU/Linux has been characterized as a goal for the PowerPC release.

Have a couple of friends working on the Debian project and they have successfully gotten Debian up and going on an old Power Mac. They are both big PC guys, but had no trouble getting Debian going on the Mac side of things. As far as I know, the hold up is getting the "Potato" release boot disks and stuff ready to go, the binaries are PPC ready and everything else should be finalized soon for the next release to officially support PPC.

This message is coming from a beige PowerMac G3 all-in-one (the ugly big sister of the iMac :) ) running Debian GNU/Linux. Anyway, Debian 2.2 has been released and I was able to download the necessary files to a MacOS partition and boot the installer using BootX. I've also compiled a 2.2.17 kernel in Debian and booted from it with BootX and I'm in the midst of downloading X11. I'd say Debian's port to PowerPC works now.

debian's ppc current distribution is great. i am using the unstable/testing distro with a 2.4.19 kernel. i installed via cd/network connection and, except for partitioning the hard drive (it's different than my x86 machine), it installed easily and has run great ever since. i am using an original tangerine clamshell ibook.
