I can't telnet in to my own machine as root

You shouldn't telnet as root ANYWAY (but yeah, the default is to disallow this in MOST if not all flavors of unix -- it's a feature of Rhapsody too).

You can always ssh as root though. :) ssh is *far* preferable as it is more secure.
