(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) System Configuration : (Category) Shared Libraries :
How does ld.so know where to look?
You should have a file called ld.so.conf in /etc with a listing of paths
containing the shared libraries on your system. If you don't have one,
here's what mine says:

/lib
/usr/lib
/usr/X11/lib
/usr/local/lib

Users can add their own paths using the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment
variable.
