(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) PowerPC Linux : (Category) LinuxPPC for PCI Macs :
After installing the Feb98 distribution, I get "Kernel panic: no init found" on boot.
After repartitioning my disks and installing the Feb98 distribution I was greeted with the following nastiness when I rebooted:
Kernel panic: no init found ...
But I checked and init and friends were all there.

After much swearing and messing around, I discovered that the /etc/quik.conf the installer made had a serious error: it said "root=/dev/sda7" but my root partition is /dev/sda6. No wonder the kernel couldn't find init; it was looking in the wrong partition!

I was able to get my box (a 7200/90) to boot by setting boot-file=" /boot/vmlinux" in OF (strangely, boot-file=" root=/dev/sda6" didn't work). Once I got the machine up, I fixed quik.conf, reran quik, and everything was groovy.

A warning is in order, however: Running MacOS Quik and then running quik from Linux causes my machine to no longer boot. If you run MacOS Quik, you need to reinstall the quik RPM before running quik from Linux.
