(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) System Configuration : (Category) Shared Libraries :
What's this about Shared Libraries?
Shared Libraries are cool. As of 1/30/97, Shared libraries are starting
to be supported in the linux/ppc kernel and expect them to show up
everywhere. Shared Libraries make everything alot smaller.

Not only are shared libraries physically smaller as files on your
hard drive but because the shared code needs to be loaded only once
into memory, they can result in a huge reductions of memory usage.
You can verify this by running vmstat before and after you install
the shared libraries. Of course you will need to install shared lib
versions of all the programs on your drive to see this benefit.
