Multiple Kernels on a 7200
One of the problems with the 7200 is that it does not have a video driver in its open firmware. This means that if you edit quik.conf to allow you to select multiple kernel you will never see the prompt unless you have a second machine connected to your Mac. The solution to this problem is quite simple and is given elsewhere in the faq, but not in an immediately obvious fashion (at least not to me). Here is how you do it:
From within linux: nvsetenv boot-file " /vmlinux.new root=/dev/sdb3" The space before the kernel name is vitally important.
From within MacOS set the boot-file option in the boot variable control-panel to /vmlinux.new root=/dev/sdb3 again their MUST be a space in front of the kernel name. I would also recommend setting the input device to kbd as this allows you to get back into MacOS by pressing "command option O F" at reboot (you need to hold the keys down for a couple of seconds) and typing bye, which means you don't have to keep on zapping the PRAM.
Many thanks go to Michael Neuhauser who told me how to do the above in the first place.
