(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Hardware Compatibility :
What PowerPC machines will NOT work with Linux?
If this is wrong or out of date, update what you know!

Linux will NOT work on:

Any 68k macintosh with a PowerPC upgrade card (this isn't the same
thing as a whole motherboard replacement in which case you are fine)

Linux-pmac will not work with most NuBus PowerPC machines because they
do not have Open Firmware. An experimental kernel exists for x100
family machines (6100, 7100, 8100, and family). LinuxPPC also will
not work with early performas (except the 54xx and 6360), and the
PowerBook 2300/5300/1400.

MkLinux R1 should support all of the above machines.

The 1400 has been found to work with several tweaks, but it still lacks many functions like external SCSI support, and `PCMCIA' support. I've not heard anything concerning the 1400 lately and a small group of coders should get together and remedy this.

Will the iMac work with Mklinux or LinuxPPC.

I'm getting what the install instructions calls the "bootstrap" error on startup.
The suggestion in the instructions is that I need to store my "mach_servers"
folder on a SCSI disk for the install process. But, I'm one of those unfortunate
folk who purchased an iMac. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get
MKlinux to install?

Will Linux ppclive be updated and made to run on an imac?
tanster1@aol.com
The 2300 does not seem to be supported at this point as far as I can tell (at least, mine doesn't fully boot, although the keyboard does work insofar as I can enter alternate paths to the bootstrap.conf if the wrong root device is specified). The boot process doesn't get much further than that.

Maybe an iMac rev.B.

I've got LinuxPPC trying to boot into XServer for the install, but after a couple of seconds the hard drive spins down and the monitor turns off.

I think there's an iMac-specific ramdisk image out there somewhere.

I have a Power Computing 120T. What linux distribution will work on this machine?
It uses the NuBus architecture.

From what I can tell, IBM RS6000/Model 7011-250, 66Mhz PowerPC601* will not work with anything except AIX. MCA is supported, PPC is supported, but not both on this machine. I'd very much like to hear otherwise if anyone knows more about this than I.
