(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Wish List :
Wish we had Netscape... WISH GRANTED!
Another revised update, Communicator 4.5, has been released. It can be found at: ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.5/english/unix/unsupported/mklinux/ What exactly "unsupprted" means, I don't know, but it works... :)

An updated version can now be found at ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.07/development/english/unix/mklinux/
Drill down from here depending on which version you want, base, professional, or just navigator.

Just a quick FYI, the URL for Netscape Communicator has changed. They no longer have version 4.04 available, so you need to go to: ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.05/development/english/unix/mklinux/
From there you can choose base_install, navigator_standalone, and professional_edition as always. and as you can see....It's now version 4.05, although the "file does not exist" problem is still there.

For you and for anyone else listening...

  ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.04/development/english/unix/mklinux/

base_install is communicator (browser, mail, news, page editor).
navigator_standalong is just the browser.
professional_edition is communicator plus some
other stuff that goes with the Pro version, but most of what is available in
(say) the Mac version of pro is not available on MkLinux (for example: the
calendar app comes from a 3rd party).

These bits were last updated in December. If you
don't have the latest, you really want it.

You will need to get to at least update 5. You must
install shared libraries.
See update 3. See:

Well...we do!
They've made a port to mklinux (I assume it will work on linuxppc as well.)
I just found it, and haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but the url is...
ftp://ftp3.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.04/development/english/unix/mklinux/

I've been using Navigator 4.04 (the binary Netscape distributes) for several days now on a 7100/80AV. While in many ways it kicks ass, it has the horrible bug of freezing up and requiring a hard boot of the system. (I wish I had another box so I could telnet in and see what was going on.) At work on the 7600/120, I haven't had these problems yet. On both systems I have DR2.1update6 running.

Sure Do!
seems a good web browser is a necessity in todays world. Basically all
we have to do is convince Netscape to build a PowerPC binary. They
already have a Linux/386 version, and there are very few things that
can't be ported EASILY. Maybe microsoft would like to do a port of their
browser?

Mail Netscape, tell them you want it!

I actually phoned Netscape (in addition to mailing them) and they claim
that they won't do it. The guy I talked to also said that the i386 version
is "very" unofficial and not company sanctioned. What we need is help from
the Linux Intel community in how they got it built/who did it.

The other approach would be to get AIX binary support. The we could run
the AIX binary release of netscape. See the AIX binary wishlist question.

Progress happens. The URL given for 4.5/english is no longer valid.
The new root is ftp://ftp.netscape.com//pub/communicator/4.51/english/unix/, but there's no linuxppc or mklinux in either the supported or unsupported directories (yet).
