(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) System Configuration : (Category) PPP :
pppd says 'PPP is not supported on this machine'.
MkLinux
Grab ppp-2.2.0f-2.ppc.rpm from

http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/os/Linux/mklinux/mkarchive/comm/connecting/ppp-2.2.0f-2.ppc.rpm

and then install it by doing a
"rpm -i --force ppp-2.2.0f-2.ppc.rpm"

Make sure your modem setup file at
/etc/ppp/ppprc.cuaX has a '\n' after the CONNECT.

Linux-pmac
You're running the wrong pppd. Linux-pmac and MkLinux require different
versions of pppd.If you're running linux-pmac, get the right
one off of cap.anu.edu.au.
