mklinux install on 6200 not quite working
i have followed the instructions for installation from the website. i have partitioned the disk the way i would like, and i put the appropriate files in the macOS system folder (ext, CP and prefs). the instructions then said if i have a scsi cdrom, which i do, that i only need to reboot. so that's what i did. then comes up the boot splash screen. i select mklinux, and it says 'system booting...' and it just says that for a long time doing nothing. 15 minutes is the longest i've waited. so i rebooted into macOS, looked at the lilo.conf and mklinux.prefs and saw that it was trying as root device the atapi cd rom (don't ask me why it was like that, the documentation says that scsi is default). so after changing it to the scsi cdrom, i let it try the default scd0, and then scd3 (the scsi drive is ID 3). it still just sits there seemingly doing nothing. what also seems odd is that i can eject the cd by pressing the button, even when it says 'system booting...' if it is doing anything with the cd, it should either not eject, or take a long time to eject.
is this just a problem with the 6200, since all the linux sites warn against these machines (52xx,53xx,62xx,63xx). or is there something else i'm missing here.

I'm right with you on this one. I have a PowerMac 5300 I'm trying to install to and I've run into exactly the same problem. The scsi id of my cdrom is 3. It just hangs at the system booting message. According to the documentation this model is supported by mklinux, so what's causing the problem. If anyone out there knows how to get around this please let me know. It's obviously a frequent problem.

I have same problem with the PowerMac 6300CD... The system stops with "System booting..." message in the screen, and the keyboard's caps lock don't answer... If anyone may help us, please may it.. =)

Same problem here. 6200, MacOS 7.5, plain standard install from the CD. The mouse cursor and buttons on screen disappear, and the system completely hangs, requiring the power button on the back to shut down.

I overcame this problem on a Performa 6200CD with MacOS 7.5 by downloading the Performa test Kernel.
You can download the kernel from ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/kernels/wip/Mach_Kernel.PERFORMA.gz The README file is here, in the same directory.
I replaced, renamed this file before booting.

I have a 5200 and my problem is after changing the lilo.conf to booting from the SCSI CD-ROM (default is ATAPI). I can load the installer, but when the "Disk setup" windows apear, and select "fdisk" button, a new window apear saying "You donīt have any hard drives available!. You probably forgot to configure a SCSI controller". But the 5200 has a IDE Hard Disk. Canīt the installer recognize my IDE HD? I partitioned my disk before todo the install, but the installer does not recognize the disk.
Saludos.

I had this problem too, but I don't believe its related to the Mach Kernel as stated above, but rather because I had virtual memory enabled under MacOS. This must be turned on early in the boot process (before the mklinux booter extension is loaded) and was causing my performa 5215CD to hang forever at 'system booting'.
Some other notes I'll state here (hoping others searching on the same problem found this answer). My performa's CDROM SCSI ID is 3, but in the lilo.conf I set it to /dev/scd0 (not scd3 as you might assume). Also, depending on which PERFORMA Mach Kernel you are using, you may have to press 'open-apple power' if you get a {IDE TIMEOUT}.
I also tried the YDL Not Mach Kernel, but wasn't able to get it to run /sbin/loader (dies there), so I'm just installing from the mklinux ISO .. estimate is 6 hours and some change for a 'Work Station'
