(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) Installation :
YDL 2.1 installer: No Harddisks found
Problem: the Yellowdog 2.1 installer doesn't find my harddisk, although Mac OS can be booted from it perfectly fine.
My configuration: Mac G3/233 (rev. 1) Seagate Baracuda II, 20 GB internal IDE disk Linux kernel 2.4.10-12a.ppc
Solution: In order for Linux to recognise the drive, you need to add
        hda=16383,16,63
to the kernel arguments at boot time.
The cause of this problem is not clear to me. Maybe the ide bus is not waiting long enough for the hard disk to respond on a query.
However, this work around fixed it for me (thanks, David Mackler !)
