(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) PowerPC Linux :
How do I install Linux/PPC on a 2001 G4?
If you recently purchased a G4 (in 2001) with an Adaptec SCSI controller, you may have experienced some difficulty with installing. In my case I couldn't even boot into Linux.
The solution was drastic, but fully successful. Take out the SCSI controller.
I have not yet tinkered around with the kernel to comment out the SCSI autoprobe, but I suspect that may be a better temporary solution and I will no longer have to leave my controller sitting on my desk. Anyway, booting Linux/PPC Q4 on a stock (ordered via The Apple Store) 2001 G4 533 with 256M RAM, with a Rage 128 in an AGP slot, seems to work perfectly. In fact, installation was ridiculously simple (I recall the days of installing Red Hat 5.0 on a home built PC)! Using Yaboot, and the corresponding config script that comes with Q4 you will find that the default accelerated graphics install and boot work perfectly. I suspect a cure to the Adaptec SCSI-lockup issue should be coming around soon. More on this soon...

Well, thanks to some helpful conversation with users I have found that the vmlinux-2.4.5-pre3g4 kernel found in the /kernels/titanium directory at ftp.linuxppc.org does fix the kernel panic due to odd PCI-SCSI-interface stuff, in new (2001) G4 models (in particular the ones with Adaptec controllers)!
The kernels that came prepackaged with my LinuxPPC 2000 Q4 set were all 2.2.x and none worked with my SCSI card installed.
In addition, the video color seems to have improved. Video worked fine before, but now is much crisper (appearently more colors). Actually, I could configure the video settings for millions of colors previously (and it appeared as it does now, great), however, the settings would only last for the duration of the session, even it saved.
Kudos to the kernel programers!

Last line should read " ... even if saved." :)
